Mission

Deviant is a quarterly Journal 'between psychiatry and society', that aims at innovating and democratizing psychiatry and its related fields.

The editors of Deviant believe that developments 'between psychiatry and society' will and must evolve in the direction of a greater societal role and responsibility.

Deviant want to contribute to these developments by:

Deviant is independant and not-for-profit. It is free of religious, commercial and professionals interests.

International contacts
Deviant wants to extend its international contacts and this is an important reason why we started this site.
We feel close to movements in other countries like those of: consumers, survivors, psichiatria democratica, community mental health, Gemeindepsychiatrie, psychosocial rehabilitation, recovery.
We have contacts in Germany, Britain, Italy, USA, Canada, France, Sweden, Denmark, Brazil. We translate many articles coming from these countries, authors being for example: Wolfgang Werner (D), Ron Coleman (GB), Giuseppe Dell'Acqua (I), Math Jesperson (S), Patricia Deegan (USA). See the index in the main menu for a complete list of authors.
This part of our site is still under construction: we welcome contributions from abroad.

Contact the editors
We are glad to receive your reactions and contributions. See the list of our email-adresses under the button "Editors'.

Who are we?
With eleven persons we form the editorial board of Deviant: Toon, Fijgje, Saskia, Mark, Heinz, Sonja, Majone, Jan, André, Pleun en Gee. Each one of us has many years of experience in mental health care and in attemps to reform it. We got this experience in various roles: as a client, as a friend or family member, as a helper, as an advocate or as a researcher. Anyone of us is familiar with at least two of these five roles, some of us played them all.
These roles and positions are also represented in the Advisory Board of Deviant. It is formed by 27 people who have contributed (and are contributing) greatly to reform-movements in Dutch mental health care.

The publisher of Deviant is the Platform GGZ Amsterdam. This mixed lobbygroup originated in 1984 with the aim of reforming mental health care in Amsterdam. It played an important part in the planning of the so-called 'Amsterdam Model'. The publisher is responsable for the financial matters, but only the editors are responsable for the contents and policies of Deviant.
